“I Just Go with What Feels Right”. Variance and Commonality in Metal Music Mixing Practice

Metal music is a genre defined by transgression, usually with the musical pursuit of heaviness. Interestingly, this commonly accepted genre-defining criterion, which can be considered as involving progress, conflicts recent suggestions that production metal becoming more and standardized, potentially hindering music’s evolution. Based on interviews eight leading producers, study investigates professionals’ mixing approaches to determine whether they match presumed standardization. The finds common result from technical requirements engineering fast, complex, sonically dense music. However, there are significant alternatives between producers choose achieve desired aesthetic outcomes. A multifaceted like its diverse subgenres requires than one approach, unique combination nuanced implementation these facilitate original results. With in mind, various approaches, processes, techniques appear evolving alongside sub-genres styles, supporting genre’s quest for transgression
